I am trying a lot of different techniques in oil painting. For the nude, once the canvas was toned, i went back and built the tones from dark, middle to light. The girl with the flower and scarf, interestingly was painted using Sargent's technique that I read about. Basically, starting with a toned canvas, and very little to no drawing, start blocking in the larger plane of colors - like sculpting a head out of clay. This was a bit harder, but it did keep the spontaniety and the colors fresh. Finally for the girl with the cowboy hat, after blocking the background for subject, I did a quick contour line in oil, and quickly blocked in the stand-out values and colors to see the relationships to work against.
